Seventeen volunteers from Burns & McDonnell partnered with RampsRVA on a humid Saturday morning to build a ramp for Elizabeth. Elizabeth lives with her daughter Sharon who works nights and cares for her mother during the day in her free time. Elizabeth, 95, had a stroke and since then has been unable to walk. She uses a wheelchair all the time, needs assistance with transfers around the house such as getting in or out of bed. She cannot exit the house without the help of both her daughter and son who carry her to the car for all of her doctor’s appointments. She could not afford to pay for a ramp but needed one to go to doctor’s appointments safely and do the things that we take for granted such as enjoying the outdoors on a nice day. Thank you Burns & McDonnell for volunteering your time, sponsoring Elizabeth’s ramp, and your never-ending dedication to your community. Burns & McDonnell is an engineering and consulting firm that is 100% employee owned and also has a philanthropic mission to give back to the communities where they call home. Ramps- Ramp Access Made Possible by Students was founded in 2005 by three Collegiate school students: Mike Dowd, Coleman Wortham and Gray Fain. RampsRVA was created to help those unable to pay for a wheelchair ramp and since then has built 557 wheelchair ramps for neighbors in need more specifically seniors and disabled persons who have qualified for financial assistance in Richmond City, Chesterfield County, and Henrico County. Ramps or RampsRVA currently has ten school partnerships active with students in the community and also partners with local businesses who sponsor a prospective ramp client. A special thank you to Lowes on Pouncey Tract Road for donating the mulch, soil, flowers and edging stones to beautify Elizabeth & Sharon’s yard.
